New Smyrna Beach, FL - Filmmakers for a new Disney movie featuring George Clooney, Hugh Laurie and country music star Tim McGraw want to shoot part of it in Volusia County.
Tuesday night’s meeting of the New Smyrna Beach City Commission features a special event application from Kimball Technologies Productions, a company involved in the production of “Tomorrowland”, a mystery adventure movie.
The application asks the city for the use of several venues from November 12 through November 15, along with the use of police escorts, short term sign removal, and short term control of traffic signals and traffic flow on various parts of Canal Street and U.S. 1.
If it’s approved during tonight’s meeting, expect road closures on North Dixie Freeway, Canal Street and other roads at times during the filming.
Event organizers plan to shoot along various parts of North Dixie Freeway during those 3 days as well as utilize a helicopter for at least part of their filming.
The production company has also asked the city to not install Christmas decorations in the areas where they will be filming until after they’ve left.
Should the filmmakers get approval Tuesday night from New Smyrna Beach, they will then have to get approval from the Florida Department of Transportation and from Volusia County.
It’s unclear if any of the stars of the movie will actually be in New Smyrna Beach during the shooting. The film itself is mostly being shot in the Canadian city of Vancouver.
