Deltona, FL - A 34-year-old man’s held without bond after deputies say he tried to kill his mother and went after his step-dad with a sword in a fight that started over a missing can of shrimp.
Jayson P. Laughman (picture courtesy Volusia County Jail) was arrested at his North Firwood Drive home around 10:30am Sunday.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office says Laughman’s step-dad, Michael E. Airhart, called 911 and demanded they come down to the home or else he was going to kill Laughman. (Click here to listen to that call.)
According to the arrest report, it all started around 8:30am that day, when Airhart says he went into his kitchen to find a can of shrimp and couldn’t find it anywhere.
Airhart told deputies he confronted Laughman over it and both got into a heated argument that started in the home and then moved to the rear patio, where he and Laughman were planning on a physical fight.
Airhart says he left the patio after Laughman smashed a statue and went into his bedroom to cool off.
A few minutes later, according to Airhart, Laughman took a Katana-style metal sword and used it to chop down their closed bedroom door into pieces.
Airhart told the deputies Laughman came at him with the sword and also threw 2 steak knives in his direction during the argument.
When questioned, Laughman stated that he went into “code red” and couldn’t remember much of what had happened during the argument.
No injuries were reported.
