Orange City, FL - An Edgewater man is dead and another person is in the hospital following an apparent scuba diving accident at Blue Spring State Park.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office says they were called out to the “Boil” section of the park at 2:52pm Wednesday, an area filled with deep caves that’s often frequented by divers.

That’s where 36-year-old Samuel Slack was pulled from the water, as was his diving partner, 37-year-old Daniel Vansickle from New Smyrna Beach.

How Slack died is uncertain at this point, according to V.C.S.O. spokesman Brandon Haught.

“We’ll be investigating the death – as is standard procedure – but no foul play is suspected,” Haught said.

Slack was transported to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial Hospital in Orange City after he was pulled from the water and paramedics attempted C.P.R.

It was at the hospital where Slack was pronounced dead at 3:43pm.

Meanwhile, Vansickle was transported to Florida Hospital Orlando for treatment. His condition is not known at this time.
