DeLand, FL - Controversy now surrounds the 131-year-old logo that the city of DeLand uses as its seal.
A group called Americans United for Separation of Church and State sent a letter to the city last month calling for them to remove what it calls symbols of Christianity in the background of the city seal.
The letter claims that the use of the Latin cross, the heart and the anchor – all in the background of the picture shown above – are a constitutional violation of the separation of church and state.
The group has asked DeLand to remove those symbols from the city logo within 30 days from the date of the letter, which is August 23rd.
DeLand city officials declined comment when contacted by WNDB.
