Orange City, FL – A Volusia County senior corrections officer wanted on child pornography charges surrenders peacefully after holding 1 of his 3 kids hostage with a gun during a standoff.

32-year-old Mark Pronovost – who works at the Volusia County Branch Jail – gave himself up just after 11am Tuesday, nearly 3 hours after he barricaded himself in his home on the 300 block of Orange Avenue near Orange City.

Volusia County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Gary Davidson says their deputies arrived on scene shortly after 8:15am to assist agents with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Immigrations & Customs Enforcement.

Those agents were trying to obtain evidence at Pronovost’s home and arrest him on 2 counts of possession of child pornography in an investigation that initially started last December. FDLE officials say they believe a computer at the home was used to download child porn.

Pronovost – who’s worked with the county for the past 11 years – was cooperative initially when contacted at the scene, but then changed his tune when he realized they were there to arrest him.

That’s when, according to agents, Pronovost grabbed his youngest child – a 1-year-old boy – and locked himself in a room with a gun. The child eventually left the room unhurt as agents negotiated their way to a peaceful surrender.

Some homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution during the standoff.

Because of his status as a corrections officer in Volusia, he will be taken to the Seminole County Jail instead of the Volusia County Jail, per FDLE. That’s also the same reason why a mugshot isn’t being released.
