Daytona Beach Shores, FL - The assistant city manager for Daytona Beach Shores will step up into the city manager position come springtime.
Kurt Swartzlander—also the city’s finance director—will step in behind the outgoing Michael Booker who announced his retirement from the city after 22 years.
Swartzlander, a Michigan native, attended Kalamazoo College for his undergraduate degree before earning a Master of Business Administration degree from Stetson University. From there, Swartzlander began his first foray into local government, landing a job as an accountant for the City of Holly Hill between 2002 and 2005.
In his time at Holly Hill, Swartzlander became the city’s finance director and assistant city manager; also working two stints as the interim city manager. He was also a founding vice president of the Volusia/Flagler Chapter of the Florida Government Finance Officers Association.
In 2018, Swatzlander began his tenure at the City of Daytona Beach Shores as finance director, before he was named assistant city manager in the spring of 2021. Following the announcement of Booker’s retirement, the city began their search for his replacement. At Tuesday’s (Jan. 25) meeting, the city decided on Swatzlander.
He is set to take over the position sometime in July 2022.
