Daytona Beach, FL - A 73-year-old Daytona Beach woman is dead after she was hit by a pickup truck while trying to cross Ridgewood Avenue near Magnolia Avenue yesterday afternoon. Daytona Beach Police say the driver stayed on the scene.

Witnesses told the Traffic Homicide Unit that the woman was crossing from the east side to the west of U.S. 1 when she was knocked to the ground by the pickup truck around 5:30 p.m.  The truck was turning north on Ridgewood from eastbound Magnolia when the accident happened.

Investigators believe the victim tried to cross Ridgewood from the curb in front of the Jimmy John’s restaurant about 25 feet away from the crosswalk. She appeared to be walking diagonally towards the crosswalk when she was struck.

When the victim was hit, she ended up on the pavement with a serious head injury.  She was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center as a trauma alert. She passed away shortly after arriving at the hospital. She is not being identified pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the pickup, a 39-year-old Ormond Beach man, stayed on scene and cooperated with the investigation. DBPD says no charges are pending at this time.

Northbound traffic on Ridgewood was shut down for several hours as officers processed the scene for evidence.
