74-Year-Old Points Air Rifle At Golfers, Gets Arrested

Palm Coast, FL - A 74-year-old man who lives on the Conservatory Golf Course in Palm Coast spent last night (April 17) in the Flagler County Jail. Flagler County Sheriff's deputies say John Orr took matters into his own hands yesterday evening to enforce the rules at the golf course.

Deputies were dispatched after receiving a call from a group of golfers that Orr pointed what appeared to point a rifle at them after a shouting altercation.  The golfers told deputies that they were in fear for their lives. Orr told deputies that he was upset that the golfers had driven a golf cart on the wooden bridge and on the putting green, which is against golf course regulations.

The investigation showed that the rifle was actually a Winchester Air Rifle, or BB gun. Orr told deputies he attempted to call the “Golf Rangers” but when he could not reach them, he went back outside with the air rifle.

“A verbal argument turned into a man facing seven felony charges,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “Grabbing a
gun of any kind is not the way to solve an argument and could have ended much differently. If you cannot resolve it peacefully, call law enforcement and let us handle the situation.”

Orr has no history with the FCSO prior to this arrest. He's charged with seven counts of Aggravated Assault. His bond was set at $2,500 and he bonded out of jail early this afternoon (april 18).
