ATV Driver Dies From Injuries Weeks After Crash

Deltona, FL - The Volusia Sheriff's Office (VSO) says an ATV driver who was critically injured after colliding with a FedEx truck in Deltona earlier this month has died.

Deputies say 35-year-old Joseph Sledge had been in the hospital since the crash occurred on February 5th.

VSO's initial investigation into the crash found that both vehicles were traveling northbound on Courtland Boulevard, toward South Dorchester Drive as the ATV was traveling on the right shoulder of Courtland.

As the FedEx driver tried to turn right onto S. Dorchester, Sledge attempted to stop the ATV before it could hit the truck. However, in doing so, the ATV and Sledge—who was not wearing a helmet—both flipped forward, causing them to strike the passenger side of the FedEx truck. The FedEx driver was uninjured, but Sledge was transported to Central Florida Regional Hospital with serious injuries.

Investigators added that drugs and alcohol did not appear to be a contributing factor in the crash. Sledge passed away on Saturday (February 20th).
