Board Member Donates $250k For Safe Zone

Daytona Beach, FL - At their last meeting, First Step Shelter board members learn that their long-awaited safe zone may be on track for a summer opening.

That's all thanks to a contribution made by another board member and business owner in Volusia County.

During Monday's meeting (January 27th), board member and Wholesale Lighting owner Rose Ann Tornatore presented a grand total of $250,000 to the board in the form of two checks. Both of which specifically meant for the safe zone.

"I wanted to wait to see if anyone else would step up," said Tornatore to WNDB Host Marc Bernier. "With all the controversy, I thought you know what? This is your time. You got to do this for the community who helped me be who I am."

In response to the generous donations, the board unanimously accepted Tornatore's gift. And, according to Tornatore, she's already working with architects to help make a permanent design for the safe zone in about two months. After the design is made, it will go in front of the board for a vote.

According to Tornatore, she wanted to give back to the community that helped her be the person that she is. She even said that she plans to leave a portion of her wealth behind for First Step.

"You can put a portion of your estate to the safe zone when you die," Tornatore said. "I have that done on my will."
