Brush Fire Near New Smyrna Beach Nearly 2,200 Acres

UPDATE:  (June 13) - After more accurate mapping of the possum camp road fire in Volusia County, it is now 1675 acres and 90% contained. Crews will be back out tomorrow to improve containment lines and check for hot spots.

New Smyrna Beach, FL - A brush fire that has spread to approximately 2,200 acres west of I-95 between S.R. 44 and S.R. 442 is still burning, per a Facebook post from the Florida Forest Service - Bunnell District at 10:30 a.m. today (June 13).

Firefighters from New Smyrna Beach, Edgewater, Volusia County, and the Florida Forest Service have been working to get what's being called the Possum Camp Road fire, under control for more than a day, with 60 percent containment reported today. This comes after eight dozers cut fire breaks and four helicopters brought in more than 100 buckets of water.

This morning (June 13) the fire was receiving a little bit of rain and the forecast for today is calling for rain and possible thunderstorms. Crews are currently improving established containment lines and working towards full containment of this wildfire. At this time there is no forward progression of the fire.
