Permit Pulled on Daytona Condo Building

Posted

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The building permit for a long-planned 31-story condo building in Daytona Beach has now been pulled, following years of inactivity and stalling. The project site, located at SR-A1A and Oakridge Blvd, has been nothing more than a foundation and some pilings and rebar for years now.

The pulling of the permit for Protogroup's project is the latest in a series of moves between them and the Daytona Beach city government regarding the building. It was at one point condemned and slated for demolition, but is now merely stalled for the foreseeable future.

There is a path for developers to resume work on the project: Protogroup would have to present a comprehensive plan for what future construction will look like, including addressing how they'll deal with the heavily weathered iron rebar which has been exposed to the elements for extended periods of time.

A structural engineer will need to sign off on Protogroup's plans, and they'll then need to re-apply for a new building permit. Glen Urquhart, the city's Chief Building Official, recently denied a request for an extension.

As for the reason Protogroup cites for the delays? They say they still need to sell more of the condo space inside the eventual building before they can resume. But with the project now three years beyond its slated completion date of 2020, it's unclear how they plan on making sales.
