DeLand, FL - The city of DeLand is committing to it's low-income seniors with the creation of the Neighbors on Wheels Program. The program is available to low income seniors needing assistance and who live in DeLand.

Mayor Robert F. Apgar said this program will be very important for senior citizens, who are at risk for contracting the disease and need to stay home as much as possible. “During these difficult times we’re looking for ways to help as many parts of our community as possible,” he said.

The Neighborhood Center of West Volusia is coordinating the program with the city, who has donated close to $10,000 to purchase food for the program.

For individuals in need of assistance, here are some instructions:

  • Call the Neighborhood Center of West Volusia main number at 386-734-8120 and extension 2.  Callers should provide their name, address, and phone number.
  • Voicemails will be checked on Mondays and Wednesdays.
  • Deliveries will be made on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • Senior citizens will be contacted by phone immediately before their food is delivered.
  • If they are not at home, the food parcels will be left on their doorsteps.

To keep the program going for a long as necessary, residents are encouraged to donate food to the Neighborhood Center to ensure individuals and families’ needs are met.
