Daytona Beach, FL - On the same day that almost 9,000 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the state, Daytona Beach city commissioners vote 6-1 to require masks in the city; the first Volusia municipality to do so.
As of right now, the new mandate only requires residents and visitors to wear masks in indoor places where social distancing is not possible.
There are a list of exceptions as well. According to the agenda from today's special meeting (June 27th), children under the age of two and those who are observing social distancing guidelines do not have to wear masks. People who have underlying health conditions that a mask may affect are also not required to wear one.
Additionally, people that are exercising, eating or drinking are not required to wear a mask. For a full list of exceptions, click here.
For the next four weeks, there will be no penalties for those who are caught not wearing masks. City officials will also be meeting with the Daytona Beach Police Department at a later date to discuss enforcement.
The mandate goes into effect this Sunday (June 28th) at 12:01 a.m.
