Daytona Police Searching for Possible Attempted Child Kidnapper

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Daytona Beach Police Department is looking for a woman they believe may have tried to abduct a child, according to a statement Monday. She's the suspect in an incident that occurred Sunday afternoon.

The incident in question happened in the early afternoon Monday when, police say, a woman came up to a mother and her six year-old child and tried to grab them. She was unable to take the child from the mother, and then fled the scene. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

The woman was described as being a lighter-skinned black woman approximately 25 to 35 years old, around 5'6" to 5'8", with short black hair in a bun, and relatively skinny. Police say that she's believed to have been wearing a gray t-shirt and a long red skirt at the time of the incident.

The would-be snatching occurred near Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, from which the mother and child were apparently walking home. Our Lady of Lourdes is advising parents not to let their children walk home alone in light of this occurrence.

Anyone with information which may help lead police to an arrest are advised to contact the Daytona Beach Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division at (386) 671-5200, or the Volusia Sheriff's Office at (386) 248-1777.
