DBCC Considering First Step Shelter Takeover

Posted

Daytona Beach, FL - The Daytona Beach City Commission is talking about possibly taking over the First Step Shelter. The subject came up at last night's meeting due to a couple of reasons. Director Mark Geallis turned in his resignation last week and during this week's Board meeting for the shelter, there was talk of disbanding.

Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry suggests the city have a contingency plan in place because the building is going to be completed in the fall and the homeless still need help. Henry said they may want to consider the options of changing the model for running the Shelter.

Zone 2 Commissioner Aaron Delgado said he'd like to ask City Manager Jim Chisholm to come up with a plan to take back the project, finishing it and then handing it over to the managing agency. The Commissioners agreed that some sort of plan needs to be put in place.

The 1st Step Shelter Board will have a special meeting next week to plan how to move forward.

An ordinance making an exception for the consumption of alcoholic beverages on commercial megacycles, and Chapter 102 (Vehicles for Hire) to redefine pedal buses as commercial megacycles and allow commercial megacycles within designated boundaries was approved unanimously by City Commission members after a second reading. Several local residents, including Ashley Garrett and Krista Goodrich spoke during public comments, asking commission members to give the ordinance the go-ahead.
