DBCC Says Masks Required In City Buildings

Daytona Beach, FL - In extending the local state of emergency for the city of Daytona Beach, City Commissioners added a requirement that wearing a mask is required when entering a city building.

Zone 3 Commissioner Quanita May made the motion to take the extension off the Consent Agenda for discussion.  She said during a drive on A1A over the weekend it appeared that not one person was wearing a mask and most were not practicing social distancing. She requested adding a recommendation to wear masks to be added to the local state of emergency.

Daytona Beach Fire Chief Dru Driscoll gave Commission members an update on COVID-19 said statistically our numbers are not going up, we're testing more often. "We're testing more but how does that translate? Yes, you're finding more positive people but out of the number of tests conducted, the margin of people actually testing positive is reduced."

City Attorney Robert Jagger recapped the discussion of the extension of the local state of emergency with two revisions. Number one would require all persons entering city buildings to wear a mask when social distancing is not available, where such persons are medically able to do so. "Secondarily, we'll insert a recommendation that all persons, again, who are medically able to tolerate a face covering, wear such when in a public place and unable to meet a six-foot social distance."

The discussion turned to the city's bandshell and how it could be reopened while adhering to CDC social distancing guidelines. A lot of ideas were shared and there was talk of reopening on July 10 but nothing was set in stone.
