DeBary, FL - The Volusia Sheriff's Office reports that a DeBary man has died from his injuries after a house fire that took place early Monday (February 3rd) morning.

The homeowner and grandmother of the victim told investigators that she was woken up by a sound in the home around 2 a.m.  She began to smell smoke and found her grandson, 27-year-old Jamie Garrett – who has a history of mental illness – in the garage, which was filled with smoke.

Initially, both Garrett and his grandmother were outside of the Lake Drive home. The grandmother left briefly to run to another home to call for help. When she returned, Garrett was nowhere to be found.

VSO reports that there were indications showing that he ran back into the home.

Rescue workers found Garrett inside of the home and pulled him to safety. He was transported to Advent Health in Orange City before being transferred to Orlando Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

He passed that afternoon around 3:30. The cause and circumstances of the fire will be investigated by the state Bureau of Fire, Arson and Explosives.
