DeLand, FL - A DeLand man is in the Volusia County Jail after DeLand police officers say he beat up his own mother over $100. Officers say 23-year-old Giovanni Bubenik also spit on two of them while they escorted him out of the residence.
An officer was flagged down by Bubenik's sister just after midnight yesterday (April 22). The girl told the officer that her brother was beating up her mother, Christina Ayulio at their residence in the 400 block of S. Boston Ave.
The officer went to the house, which he saw Ayulio running out of. She also said that Bubenik had beat her up, telling the officer that he'd asked for the $100 he'd lent her only hours after she'd borrowed it. Ayulio said she told him she would pay it back as soon as she could. He left the residence but came back in the evening and a verbal altercation took place.
Ayulio said she went out of the house to calm down and when she tried to go back in, Bubenik had locked her out. She told officers that she used a baseball bat to break a piece of wood covering a window. When she entered the house, Bubenik started attacking her, throwing her to the floor and punching her in the back of the head. Ayulio said that he then bit her on the stomach. She said she was able to grab his face and scratched him to defend herself.
Ayulio's young daughter, who originally flagged him down, corroborated the story, saying that Bubenik stomped on the back of her mother's head and punched her several times with closed fists.
Bubenik told a different story, stating that his mother had hit him with the baseball bat, which is when he defended himself by punching her in the face. Officers reported that Bubenik did not have injuries consistent with being hit by a baseball bat.
Both Christina Ayulio and her daughter refused to provide witness statements. Bubenik was arrested and as he was taken out of the house, he spit on the windows. He then turned and spit on both officers, which resulted in two felony charges of battery on a law enforcement officer. That charge is added to aggravated battery causing bodily harm and assault. He remains in custody on an $8,000 bond.
