DeLand, FL - A 46-year-old man faces a multitude of charges following an incident with his mother and deputies.

The Volusia Sheriff's Office says the incident took place at a home off of Leon Avenue yesterday evening (April 11th). There is where deputies says Brent Smith came home intoxicated and started an argument with his mother – whom he shares the residence with.

At some point during the argument, Smith reportedly shoved his mother several times before grabbing a butter knife and screaming at her, calling her obscene names and saying “I will kill you!” When she tried to call for help, Smith grabbed her phone and was even holding onto it when deputies arrived.

When Smith was placed into custody, he started arguing with deputies. Smith also began to cough at them and make threats including “bashing your f*ing brains in.”

After he was placed in a patrol car, Smith began to threaten the deputy further, saying: “I hope you die. I hope you catch corona. I hope the coronavirus, I hope it latches on to you…” before he began to cough and blow air at the deputy. Most of his actions were caught on body worn cameras.

Smith was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery on a person 65 or older, tampering with a witness, robbery by sudden snatching, grand theft, assault on a law enforcement officer, corruption by threat against a public official and violation of probation on an original charge of aggravated battery on a pregnant person.

He was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail where he remains in custody with no bond.
