Denys Launches Bid For Volusia County Chair

DeLand, FL - Deb Denys is in the race for Volusia County Chair after filing papers this morning (January 17) at the Supervisor of Elections Office.  She made the final decision last night (January 16) when current Chair Ed Kelley announced he will not be seeking re-election at a banquet held in Denys honor.

Denys was elected to the District 3 seat, representing southeast Volusia county, in 2012. She was re-elected in 2014 and 2018.  Since there are still two years left in her current term, she will have to resign her District 3 seat. Denys must resign at least ten days prior to the first day of the candidate qualifying period in June. Her resignation would be irrevocable and take effect on January 1, 2021. The primary is scheduled for August 18.

“We’ve made a great deal of progress on many of the issues that impact our quality of life here in Volusia County,” said Denys. “But we still have a lot of challenges to face. It’s going to take a steady and reliable hand to effectively address critical issues such as growth,
economic development, protection of our precious water resources and the restructuring of county government that’s underway. We need continuity now more than ever, and I’m ready to step up and take on the additional duties of County Chair and help lead Volusia County into a bright and prosperous future.”

Denys already has her first endorsement. During last night's annual Volusia County Association for Responsible Development, after she made her announcement, Ed Kelley joined her at the podium and encouraged his supporters to back Denys. “You have my hundred percent support,” he told Denys. “I look forward to it.”

Kelley is retiring because he wants to spend more time with family.
