The driver in a Saturday motor collision has passed away from his injuries, the Volusia Sheriff's Office confirmed on Monday. The crash involved only one vehicle, and no other people were hurt.
According to a report from the VSO, they received calls at around 8:00 pm on Saturday that a white Chevrolet pickup truck was seen driving erratically and swerving through traffic, per witnesses. The truck was reported to be around the area of Charles R. Beall Blvd and Fort Florida Rd.
When deputies responded, they found the truck having already crashed, partially submerged underwater in the St. Johns River at the Highbanks Boat Ramp, located at 499 Highbanks Road in DeBary. One witness account of the crash said that the truck came in at a high speed and hit a tree.
Upon responding to the accident, deputies discovered a 26-year-old man who was said to have been driving the truck. He was reportedly alive and breathing, but unconscious when emergency responders arrived. Personnel from Orange City Fire Rescue pulled the driver out of the vehicle after deputies broke a window in order to place pressure onto an injury they spotted. He was taken to a local hospital by ambulance from there.
A cause of death is still pending as the Volusia Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the incident. The VSO sent its condolences to the family and friends of the victim, but did not confirm his identity.
