First Step Shelter "Walk A Mile For Another" Event Gets A Matching Donor

Posted

Daytona Beach, FL - With the start of the "Walk a Mile for Another" virtual walkathon at First Step Shelter this Saturday, May 22, Executive Director Victoria Fahlberg is asking for more people to sign-up. She says an anonymous donor has promised to match donations dollar-for-dollar up to $15,000. "They're going to match whatever we get, up to $15,000, so it's really important for us to be able to bring in $15,000. That's definitely our goal."

Fahlberg said there's a suggested goal of $100 per individual and $250 for a team of four. She set her own goal at $300 and was surprised to get more. "I found that it was actually really easy. In two days, I had $450. I changed it then to $900. I haven't reached that yet but I believe that I'll be able to." So far, she has only asked family members and was touched by a note from one of her sons. "He said, 'You know, Mom, you've done so much for me and never asked for anything. I was really happy to do this for you.'"

If you'd like to take part in the "Walk a Mile for Another" virtual walkathon, you're asked to walk a mile wherever you'd like between May 22 and May 31. To register and keep track of your pledged donations, visit firststepshelter.org. Registration is $20 for individuals and $75 for teams of up to four people. An individual donation page will be set up for each participant where they can direct their friends and family to make contributions. You can also see the current pledged amount on the page.

Everyone who registers will get a First Step Shelter walkathon T-shirt. Prizes will be awarded to the top three individuals or teams who raise the most money. One prize is valued at $100, another is valued at $50 and a third is worth $25.

At the conclusion of your walk, post pictures of you or your team telling how much you raised to help First Step residents progress along their path from homelessness to housing.
