DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The first black woman to serve on the Daytona Beach City Commission has passed away at the age of 95. Freddye Moore served on the city's governing body in the 1980's, including a stint as chairperson.

Along with her public service, Moore was also an educator and school administrator. She received her Bachelor's at Tougaloo College in 1949, in her home state of Mississippi. In 1978, she received her Master's from Stetson University, well into her educational career.

Moore was appointed to the City Commission in 1984 when her husband, City Commissioner Andrew Moore, passed away. She served through to 1992. In 1995, Moore was elected to the Volusia County Council, a post she'd then hold until 1998.

Moore's funeral was held this weekend at Mount Bethel Baptist Institutional Church in Daytona, which she attended for much of her life. The church is located near her longtime home.
