Daytona Beach, FL - The beginning of the new Beachside Elementary School, a consolidation of Ortona and Osceola elementary schools, got underway with a groundbreaking ceremony this morning (August 2). Since the new school will be built on the Ortona site, Beachside Elementary students, teachers, and staff will be housed at the nearby Osceola site in Ormond Beach during construction of the new school.

From a press release issued by Volusia County Schools (VCS): 'The new Beachside Elementary School will serve up to 765 students in 95,000 square feet of educational space to include a two-story classroom building, separate buildings for art, music, and the cafeteria, 115 parking spots, and outdoor learning space with two playgrounds, courts, and a covered play area. The infrastructure will support upgraded technology and enhanced security. One existing building on the site will remain for use with the new structures.'

“This new state-of-the-art school will bring significant, modern educational opportunities to our students,” said VCS Superintendent Dr. Scott Fritz. “Although great teachers, involved families, and community partners are key to students’ success, the learning environment also plays a vital role.”

State and local dignitaries, business partners, community leaders, and Shelldon from the Daytona Tortugas joined the school family and VCS officials for the groundbreaking.

Dr. Fritz thanked the residents of Volusia County for supporting the Half-Cent Sales Tax initiative that funds replacement schools such as this, along with needed school renovations, security enhancements, and technology upgrades.
