Huge Octopus Apparently Sighted in Volusia County Lagoon

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - A bizarre photo made its rounds in Volusia County Facebook circles on Monday, as what appeared to be a massive octopus was photographed near New Smyrna Beach. The animal was clearly visible from the surface and was said to be in Mosquito Lagoon.

No positive species identification has been attributed to the octopus, which was initially photographed by Dylan Perdomo. Mosquito Lagoon is connected to the Atlantic Ocean and there are octopus species native to the Atlantic, and so it is possible the animal is perfectly content in its native habitat.

Furthermore, a specimen over four feet long was discovered washed ashore in August 2017, in nearby Wilbur-by-the-Sea. This octopus in particular became locally viral when its photo was shared by Volusia County Councilman Danny Robins, who said he's seen them around the area before.
