41-year-old Deltona resident Earl Myers was arrested Saturday after being stopped for an invalid license plate. Video of the traffic stop appeared to show Myers debating the situation with deputies from inside of his vehicle after being asked to exit. Deputies broke his driver's side window in order to remove him.
The plate on Myers' truck reportedly read 'DOT Exempt', with a PR1V4T3 number. According to the Volusia Sheriff's Office, this plate was fictitious. He was charged with possession of a counterfeit license plate, driving without a license, driving an unregistered motor vehicle, and obstructing an officer without violence. Myers was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail on Saturday and then released on bond on Sunday.
Myers was previously arrested on Thursday, April 24th after he was stopped for the same reason: an invalid license plate. In that encounter he was heard telling a deputy that the Florida statute he was accused of violating was not a law. This is incorrect, as Florida statutes are the laws passed and codified by the state legislature.
He then was heard telling the deputy that he was driving a 'vehicle', and not a 'motor vehicle', and thus was not required to carry a driver's license. He debated deputies at-length about the legality of driving without valid registration, license, and tag before eventually being removed from his vehicle and arrested.
In that instance he was charged with two counts of possession of a weapon by an in-state felon, cannabis possession, driving without a license, driving an unregistered motor vehicle, giving a false name upon being arrested, and resisting an officer without violence. He was released the following day on bond.
