Daytona Beach, FL - The man indicted on first-degree murder charges in the death of Bethune-Cookman University student and football player 23-year-old Don'Kevious Johnson is found guilty of the lesser charge of second-degree murder. The jury took 3 and a half hours to come back with that verdict for 26-year-old Lamont Postell, Jr. on Thursday (September 19).
The shooting took place at the end of a party on February 13, 2016. During the party, Postell was beaten unconscious by Johnson. The shooting happened at the end of the party when Johson threatened Postell again in the parking lot. Postell was in a friend's car when he fired the shot.
Postell did not testify on Thursday but did testify during a stand-your-ground hearing on April 15. During that hearing, he testified that he shot Johnson because of the beating.
With the first-degree murder charge, Postell was facing a sentence of mandatory life in prison. The second-degree murder charge means he faces 25 years to life in prison. Postell is also found guilty of two charges of attempted second-degree murder in the shootings of Justine Cunningham, then 20, of Rockaway, N.Y., and Tre Jamal Williams, then 21, of Palmetto. Postell faces between 25 years to life on each of those two counts as well.
A sentencing date has not been set.
