Man Injured In Supposed Suicide Pact Charged With Girlfriend's Death

Holly Hill, FL - It was apparently supposed to be a suicide pact. But, when his girlfriend died and he didn’t, he ended up charged with her death.

Alec Almanzar and Ayadilis Chalas walked into the Hot Shot Shooting Range in Holly Hill on October 7 and used a credit card to rent a handgun, two targets, and some hearing protection. Minutes later, the two put their heads together as Almanzar pulled the trigger. Chalas died as a result, but when medics arrived on the scene, they found Almanzar sitting in a chair putting pressure on his wound.

Almanzar had to go through emergency surgery and sedation, but he was ultimately discharged from the hospital in December; and went up to New York to see his family. While he was in New York, he was arrested and charged with second-degree murder with a firearm for Chalas’ death.

According to court documents obtained by News Daytona Beach, a well-being check was conducted at an apartment in Ormond Beach the same day the suicide pact was carried out. The family of a young woman said she had posted something on social media that alarmed them, alleging that she and someone else were “going to a safe place away from this world.” The young woman turned out to be Chalas.

Other court records show Almanzar remains in custody with no bond. He had a first appearance scheduled for Thursday (Feb. 24), the day after he was extradited from New York. He’s now set to be arraigned on March 22.
