Deltona, FL - A 65-year-old man involved in a Christmas Eve disturbance shoots his sister after she came out of the house towards responding deputies.

Those deputies ended up returning fire, fatally wounding the shooter, who has been identified as Harvey Cantrell.

According to the Volusia Sheriff's Office, the disturbance was reported just after 8 p.m. last night at a home off of Gaucho Circle. That same day, the 73-year-old sister, who lives out-of-state, called a relative and told them that Cantrell was irrational, abusive and armed with a firearm.

After the call went out, responding deputies set up a perimeter around the house and attempted to establish a dialogue to get the sister out of the house. Just before 9 p.m., she came out the front door followed closely by Cantrell, who then fired at her, shooting her in the shoulder. The bullet then traveled toward her head and struck her face.

In response, three deputies opened fire on Cantrell and killed him.

The shooting is now under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Each deputy who fired a shot has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard in a situation such as this.

According to VSO's release, Sheriff Mike Chitwood thanks the deputies for acting quickly to save the life of the woman who was shot. She was rushed to Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sandord, where she was listed in stable condition.
