Minimum Wage To Increase Twice Next Year

Posted

The minimum wage in the State of Florida is expected to hit its first increase at the start of 2021.

This increase will take the state's current minimum wage of $8.56 and increase it nine cents to $8.65 in January. While state voters recently approved a bill to increase minimum wage to $15 by September of 2026, this increase actually stems from the Florida Minimum Wage Amendment—also known as Amendment 5—that was passed in 2004.

The amendment made it possible for minimum wage to increase as the cost-of-living changes. Minimum wage will also go up for tipped workers as well. Instead of the $5.54 an hour tipped workers already earn, they will earn $5.63 an hour, another nine cent increase to coincide with Amendment 5.

Minimum wage will then increase once more on September 30th—as it will do over the next few years—to $10 as part of the $15 minimum wage initiative that was passed in November.
