A suggestion has been made by the New Smyrna Beach Charter Review Committee which would double the length of a term in office for the city's mayor. Only one committee member voted against the idea, which is being recommended to the New Smyrna Beach City Commission.
As of now, the term length for the city's mayor is two years. Under the committee's recommendation, it would be extended to four. According to a report by the Daytona Beach News-Journal, the committee members feel this would help promote stability and allow the officeholder to continuously work to build a trusting relationship with their constituents.
This and other recommended changes to the New Smyrna Beach City Charter will be packaged together in one report which will be delivered to the City Commission for consideration at a later date. The next scheduled meeting for the Charter Review Committee is on Tuesday, June 3rd.
Members of the committee were each appointed by the City Commission, including the mayor. Their names are Mark Billings, Steve Fusilier, Spencer Hathaway, Michael Ison, Farley Palmer, Diane Puhl, Judy Reiker, Dan Rokjer, Sandra Smith, and Palmer Wilson.
