UPDATE 12:30 PM (MARCH 11): According to a tweet from Chief Young, Macean confessed to the murders of Terry and Brenda Aultman.

UPDATE 6:56 PM: Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young says Jean Macean of Orlando was arrested Thursday morning (March 10) by a task force that included the U.S. Marshals Service, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, and the Orlando Police Department.

He’s now facing two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Terry and Brenda Aultman, victims of an attack on the first Sunday (March 6) of Bike Week.

According to Young, Macean arrived in the Daytona Beach area by bus on Saturday (March 6) and left the area sometime Sunday by unknown means.

“He’s currently being questioned by investigators in Orlando,” said Young at a press conference Thursday night. Evidence was also recovered by detectives, but Young said he could not go into specifics about that, or the interview.

“Unfortunately, there are still a lot of unanswered questions. Some of the details, I won’t be able to (talk about) at this time as the investigation continues. But the main purpose for this press conference today is to inform the residents of this city, and the visitors of the city, that the suspect responsible for committing these heinous crimes is in custody.”

Brenda’s daughter, Sara Turner, also spoke.

“This is a nightmare that I never expected,” Turner said. “This isn’t real, it doesn't feel real, and I don’t think it will ever feel real.”

She went on to describe her mother, or as she said, her best friend.

“My mother was the most amazing, caring, giving, loving, selfless person in the world. And to top it off, she was funny as can be. So was her husband, they were both wonderful and happy. They didn’t deserve what happened to them.”

Turner thanked the authorities in charge of the investigation for bringing a “monster” off the streets and into custody.

Young later added that the Aultmans did everything right when it came to going out at night and consuming alcohol. Neither of them drove—they rode bikes—and they stuck together. But, despite “checking all the boxes,” they were still the victims of a random and heinous crime.

“This is just a reminder of the evil that exists in our society today,” said Young. “That’s why it’s important to inform everybody that the suspect responsible for this is in custody, and the investigation is ongoing.”

At this point in the investigation, there is no motive to the killings. The department was flooded with tips about the suspect, but Young says it’s hard to determine if Macean had been in the Daytona Beach area prior to the murder. His criminal history is small, consisting only of one felony and two misdemeanor arrests, both related to drugs.

Macean will have his first appearance before a judge in Orlando before extradition back to Volusia County. It’s not known when he will be brought back.

UPDATE 5:49 PM: Chief Jakari Young posted the following update to social media:

DAYTONA BEACH - The Daytona Beach Police Department has made an arrest in the murders of Brenda and Terry Aultman, a spokesperson confirms to WNDB. The couple had been riding bikes near their home when they were found at the corner of North Wild Olive Avenue and Riverview Boulevard, stabbed to death in a mess of blood.

“This is probably one of the most vicious and gruesome incidents that I’ve witnessed in my 20 years,” Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young said to WESH. “We can’t rule out that this may be totally random, but if it is totally random, the person responsible has to be deranged.”

A press conference is scheduled for 6:00 pm in which more details will be provided by the DBPD.

News Daytona Beach's Sean Mooney contributed the update to this report.
