Daytona Beach, FL - Investigators say a 68-year-old Ormond Beach man has died from injuries he sustained after his car drove into a pond.

Two officers were called to the scene near the offices of the Daytona Beach News-Journal (DBNJ) shortly after the call for help went out Thursday afternoon (March 11th). At the scene, police were able to free the man from a car that had driven into a pond behind the building.

After rescue workers arrived, paramedics intubated the driver and transported him to Halifax Health Medical Center as a trauma alert in stable condition.

A passenger, a 52-year-old Daytona Beach man, was able to free himself from the car before first responders arrived on scene. He was medically cleared at Halifax Health, but was arrested by the Daytona Beach Police Department not long after he was released by medical staff.

According to police, the man had an open, unrelated Orange County Sheriff’s Office warrant for failure to appear in court.

Prior to his arrest, the passenger added that he and the driver were drinking alcohol just before they attempted to leave the DBNJ back parking lot. As they drove out, the car struck a ground berm, which caused it to go airborne before landing in the pond.

Police do not expect to file charges.
