Daytona Beach, FL - A report from the Florida Department of Health (DOH) shows over 5 million people have been vaccinated for COVID-19 in the state as officials continue to lower the age of eligibility.
According to that report, 5,057,939 people have been vaccinated as of Tuesday (March 23rd). Out of those 5.05 million individuals, 2,266,723 have received their first dose of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which require two doses.
Meanwhile, 2,791,216 people have completed their series, which includes both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines and the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine—which has been administered to 175,379 individuals, according to the DOH.
The report from the DOH also indicates that seniors over the age of 65 remain as the most vaccinated group in the state, with 3,178,147 individuals having been vaccinated. Of those almost 3.18 million people, 2,058,270 have completed their full vaccine series.
Locally, Volusia and Flagler County health officials have vaccinated 161,750 individuals in both counties—with 127,327 in Volusia and 34,423 in Flagler. In Volusia, 50,875 people have received their first dose, while 76,452 other individuals have completed their vaccine series. 14,532 have completed their first dose in Flagler, while 19,891 have finished their full series.
The most recent change to vaccine eligibility came on Monday (March 22nd) when the state lowered the age threshold to 50 and over, when just the week before the threshold dropped from 65 to 60 years of age.
State officials have yet to reveal when the next change will be or what age group will qualify. But, they're just a little over a month away from when President Joe Biden is expected to direct all states to make all adults eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine, which is expected to occur on May 1st. According to a fact sheet from the White House, the goal is to get the nation "closer to normal" by Independence Day (July 4th).
