'Pizza Order' 911 Call Leads to Pierson Arrest

Posted

What may have initially sounded like an egregious misdial turned out to be the genesis of a successful 911 call leading to an arrest in Pierson by the Volusia Sheriff's Office. A caller dialed 911 around 4:00 am over the weekend who spoke to the dispatcher as if she was ordering a pizza. She was actually trying to sneakily call the authorities from a dangerous situation.

"I would like to order a pizza, I'm so stuck in here," the caller said to the dispatcher. The dispatcher asked the caller if they were aware they were calling 911, a yes-or-no question which would help prevent the caller from tipping off anyone in earshot. "Yes, I'm sure I'm calling to that number," she said. "Trying to get a pizza."

The dispatcher asked for an address, but the caller said she didn't know where she was. She communicated her predicament saying she was stuck and couldn't get home, before asking the dispatcher for pepperoni and extra cheese. She said that it was only her and one man present, and that he did not have weapons. The woman's location was tracked from the VSO's 911 Communications Center and deputies were dispatched there immediately. It turned out to be a field in rural Pierson.

She avoided saying her name or the name of her attacker, but did confirm to the dispatcher that she was hurt. Once they arrived, deputies got out on foot and began to search for the exact location of the caller. According to an account of the incident by Sheriff Mike Chitwood, the deputies heard loud music coming from the field and found a man on top of a woman, who was screaming. Deputies pulled him off and handcuffed him, while the woman thanked both them and Jesus through tears.

The suspect was 27-year-old Luis Diego Hernandez-Moncayo, a man the VSO says is in the country illegally. He's said to have applied for asylum the day before the incident. He has previous arrests in Volusia County for driving without a valid license. He was arrested in this case for sexual battery, false imprisonment, battery by strangulation, and illegal immigration. He's currently being held at the Volusia County Branch Jail without bond. The U.S. Border Patrol is engaged with his case.

"The victim in this case said she had known her assailant, that they had gone into the fernery to drink a couple drinks," Chitwood said. "That's all it was supposed to be. However, during this outing he did a line of cocaine, and she said he did a 180...he became extremely violent and wouldn't let her go, and tried to rape her."
