Police Name Devonte Smokes in Wednesday Homicide

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Daytona Beach Police Department have named Devonte Smokes as a person of interest in connection to an active homicide investigation. Smokes has been connected to the Wednesday drive-by shooting that occurred around Bellevue Ave and S Nova Rd and left one victim dead.

Smokes was initially arrested Wednesday on separate charges. According to police, he fled multiple officers during an attempted traffic stop and even drove his car toward one, nearly hitting him.

Before being charged in the homicide, Smokes has been issued four felony charges for the ordeal leading to his arrest: aggravated fleeing/attempting to elude, aggravated assault on an officer, fentanyl possession, and driving with a suspended license. He was additionally given one misdemeanor charge of resisting an officer without violence.

Smokes was already on probation for battery prior to this newest arrest according to his police report. He's being held currently at the Volusia County Branch Jail on no bond. Police are still searching for other individuals who may have had some involvement with the homicide.
