Port Orange Boy Drowns In Daytona Beach Shores

Daytona Beach Shores, FL - A 13-year-old Port Orange boy drowns after being pulled underwater by rip currents on Sunday.

Volusia County Beach Safety says the teen was playing in the water with his friends around 6:40 that night when he was pulled underwater. It wasn’t until almost 7:30 that his body was recovered near the Sunglow Fishing Pier. The lifeguard towers on the beach were closed and not staffed at the time.

It's important to exercise the utmost caution when swimming on the shore. If you're caught in a rip current, you're advised to swim parallel to the shore to try and escape its pull and never swim against the current. Once you're out, swim back towards the beach. And most importantly, always swim near a staffed lifeguard tower.
