Researchers Studying Shipwreck Recently Uncovered in Daytona Beach Shores

DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. - Archaeologists are arriving in Daytona Beach Shores this week after what appears to be a massive shipwreck was uncovered by erosion just days ago. Two long, narrow lengths of apparent wreckage were uncovered in just a few feet of water.

The possible shipwreck is just the latest in a series of fascinating discoveries on the coasts of Volusia, Flagler, and even St. Johns counties following a series of storms in the last few months. The bulk of the discoveries are attributed to the effects of hurricanes Ian and Nicole, which drastically altered the beach sands late last year.

An official with Volusia County Beach Patrol said it's believed that the wreckage is the hull of a ship, and that it's the first such discovery in the area in some 20 years. The structure is between 25 and 30 feet long.

Daytona Beach Shores as a whole has now likely had two instances of shipwrecks being discovered following last year's hurricanes, with another being revealed at the end of last year and dated to the 1800's.
