Resilient Volusia Webinars Scheduled This Week

DeLand, FL -  Volusia County Environmental Management's  (VCEM)  Sustainability and Resilience Manager Katrina Locke is encouraging Volusia County residents to learn more about the impacts of sea-level rise and storms on coastal construction. You can do so by taking part in the Resilient Volusia webinars scheduled tomorrow (April 29) from 6 until 7:30 p.m. and Friday (April 30) from noon until 1:30 p.m.

Locke says her division has been working on resiliency issues for a few years. Getting the community to be engaged in the conversation and the planning process around resiliency is the purpose of the webinars. "During those webinars, we'll be providing education about what resiliency is and why it's important for our community and members to engage in the conversation. We want to share the work that we've done to date."

Sea level rise and storm surge events can cause disastrous flooding along the coast but can also cause issues for other parts of Volusia County. Locke says one way to keep the effects of flooding down on your property by planting a 'green infrastructure area.' "Those plants can help to uptake the nutrients in that water. Those plants can help uptake those nutrients and prevent them from getting down into our groundwater system."

If you can't take part in either of the webinars, Locke says a link will be posted to the county's Facebook page.
