DeLand, FL - From the DeLand Police Department:

The DeLand Police Department is deeply saddened to announce the death of Retired DeLand Police Chief Richard Marvin Slaughter (November 25, 1940 - December 6, 2021). In total, Chief Slaughter dedicated 33 years of service to the citizens of DeLand with 22 of those years as chief. He was a lifetime member of the Volusia County Police Chiefs Association, Florida Police Chiefs Association, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Chief Slaughter served as President of the Volusia County Police Chiefs Association from 1977-1978 and President of the Florida Police Chiefs Association from 1985-1986.

Chief Slaughter is remembered for exemplary conduct, professionalism, and leadership. From Mayor Apgar – “Richard was a cop’s cop. He led our police department through some challenging times and always served DeLand’s citizens well and faithfully. DeLand has lost someone who cared very much about this city and I have lost a dear friend.”

The “Richard M. Slaughter Briefing Room'' inside our police station was dedicated to him in 2001.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Chief Slaughter’s friends, family, and former colleagues at this difficult time.

Visitation will be held on Friday, December 17th, 2021 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home (126 E New York Ave, DeLand, FL 32724). A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 18th, 2021 at 10:00 AM at the same location.
