School Superintendent Search Underway In Volusia County

DeLand, FL - The search for a new School Superintendent in Volusia County is underway and the School Board says that community engagement is vital to the process. School Board Chair Carl Persis said there are any number of ways for students and their families and the rest of the community to give their input.

There are a number of ways for the community to participate in the selection process. Persis said there is an online survey available on the Volusia County Schools website. Four community forums are scheduled around the county through the month of September:

Community forums are scheduled from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on these dates:

September 05, 2019, at Port Orange South Daytona Chamber of Commerce, 3431 Ridgewood Avenue, Port Orange

September 16, 2019, at DeLand High School, 800 North Hill Avenue, DeLand

September 19, 2019, at Deltona City Hall 2345 Providence Blvd., Deltona

September 23, 2019, at Holly Hill School 1500 Center Ave., Holly Hill

Persis said that all forums will be facilitated by the Florida School Board Association, the agency that is conducting the search for the new superintendent. The input from the online surveys and gathered at the forums will be correlated by the Florida School Board Association to aid in the search for a new superintendent.

During the next School Board meeting, scheduled for Thursday, August 28, the Board will appoint a 25-member Citizens Advisory Committee, who will review the applicants resumes. The deadline for applicants is September 25, The very next day, the Advisory Committee will have the first meeting to get the reviews underway. Persis said the Committee will meet again on October 2nd and again on the 10th with the goal of narrowing down and ranking some ten choices for the job.

Persis said the plan is to have interviews with the three to five finalists on November 6th, 7th, and 8th. A reception is scheduled at the Sanborn Center in DeLand on November 7th. The public is invited to meet the candidates. The School Board expects to make their final decision before the Thanksgiving holiday and have the new Superintendent in place the first week of January 2020.
