Sheriff Chitwood Offers Halloween Safety Tips

Volusia County, FL - Tonight is Halloween, meaning that the ghosts and ghouls will be out to play.

And by ghosts and ghouls, we mean the costumed children and teens of Volusia County coming out to trick or treat.

Tonight might also be a night about having fun, but Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood wants everyone to be on the same page when it comes to safety this Halloween.

Of course, one of tonight's biggest concerns will be kids and teens walking and crossing the streets of Volusia. Sheriff Chitwood wants to remind residents to cross streets at corners with crosswalks, obey traffic signals and look both ways for traffic.

"When you're crossing the street make eye contact," said the Sheriff to News Daytona Beach. "And don't walk with your electronic devices out."

Parents are also asked to accompany their children out or designate someone to watch their children when they go out to trick or treat. Trick or treaters are also urged to watch out for unlit houses and avoid walking up to them.

"Obviously if there's a house that's not lit, we advise you to stay away," said Chitwood.

Sheriff Chitwood also asks residents to educate themselves on the addresses and locations of registered sex offenders and predators in the area.

"Their homes are not allowed to have any type of decorations up, they're not to do anything to entice kids to come to their house," said Chitwood.

That includes any kind of lights, inflatable decorations and signage. They're also not allowed to give out candy. Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly issued a similar notice yesterday regarding sexual offenders and predators in his area.
