Daytona Beach, FL - The son accused of killing his mother at her DeBary home is now officially staring down an indictment for first-degree murder, according to the State Attorney’s Office.

His name is David Rivera, and he is now indicted for the death of his mother, Belgica Rivera. he was arrested in early February outside of a grocery store by Volusia County deputies, days after his mother was found dead in her home. Deputies described the scene as bloody and found signs of a struggle.

Blood found on Rivera’s clothing is what linked him to the crime. Spontaneous statements Rivera made to detectives also implicated him in his mother’s death, along with other evidence found at the scene.

In the investigation, detectives learned that she had been in an argument with her son about three days prior to her death. They also learned Rivera has a history of violence and threatening behavior towards his mother.

A records check reveals a rather dark criminal past involving his mother. A previous arrest includes an incident in 2016 where, after an argument with his mother, Rivera climbed up a tree and killed his mother’s dog by hanging it. He also threatened to hang himself, but he was taken into custody after an 8-hour standoff. He was also charged with felony cruelty to animals.
