Study: Deltona Among Worst Areas For STEM Professionals

The study finds that the city ranks 95th out of 100

Deltona, FL - Despite efforts to develop the area, one study finds that Volusia's most populous city is one of the worst in the nation for STEM professionals.

According to WalletHub, STEM – Science Technology Engineering and Math – workers are in fierce demand, with a growth of 8.8% forecast between 2018 and 2028.

Given the growing demand, STEM careers today provide some of the most lucrative employment opportunities. They can also pay higher salaries and boast far fewer threats of unemployment when compared to other jobs.

For their latest study "2020's Best & Worst Metro Areas for STEM Professionals," WalletHub compared the 100 largest STEM markets around the nation across 21 key metrics. Those metrics range from per-capita job openings, median wage growth and projected demands for STEM workers.

Out of 100 metro areas, nine Florida cities made the list with Orlando coming in at number 1 for the state and number 12 overall. And, just five from the bottom, came Deltona at 95.

In the categories of professional opportunities, STEM "friendliness" and quality of life, Deltona ranked 94th, 63rd and 97th, respectively.

The only Florida city to make the list under Deltona was Cape Coral, which came in dead last at 100. Other cities included Tampa at 23, Jacksonville at 61, Miami at 68, Palm Bay at 73 and Lakeland at 93.

Cape Coral was also said to have the lowest annual median wage growth for STEM workers by WalletHub.
