DeLand, FL - A man accused of trying to steal a car remains in jail after the Volusia Sheriff's Office says he spit at, threatened and head-butted deputies during his arrest.

Deputies and officers of the DeLand Police Department were called for help after receiving the first reports of the attempted carjacking Sunday afternoon (July 19th).

According to VSO, a 16-year-old male claims he was riding in a car with his grandmother when an unknown male, who was later identified as 28-year-old Jeremy Bozarth, opened a rear door and got in the car near East New York Avenue and Spring Garden Avenue.

That's when Bozarth grabbed the woman's arm and said "I need you to drive the car now or I will kill you." The grandmother and her grandson were both able to escape from the car and Bozarth with keys in hand.

Bozarth was quickly spotted and arrested by law enforcement after the carjacking attempt.

However, after he was placed in a patrol vehicle, Bozarth began to spit and slam his head against the car's interior partition. A deputy tried to put a spit mask on Bozarth, which is when he began to thrash around and kick. Bozarth also injured his toe in the process.

After thrashing arround, deputies applied restraints to try and keep Bozarth from hurting himself or the others. As they did, Bozarth continued an onslaught of threats against the deputies involved. He also head-butted a deputy in the forehead and bit him on the wrist.

Deputies charged Bozarth with attempted carjacking, burglary with battery, battery on a law enforcement officer, assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence, and threatening a law enforcement officer.

Records show that Bozarth is still in custody with a $71,000 on the initial charges, and no bond on a violation of probation on a previous robbery conviction. Records also show that Bozarth has been booked by Volusia County Corrections nine other times since 2015.
