Time Change, Volusia County Lawn Watering Schedule Change Happen Sunday

Posted

DeLand, FL - It's time to go back to standard time by falling back an hour on Sunday morning at 2 a.m. It's also time for Volusia County's lawn watering schedule to change.

Tom Carey is the Volusia County Water Quality & Pollution Control Manager. He says that two days of watering per week is good during the growing season but during the winter, lawns and plants go dormant. "The days start getting shorter, it starts getting cooler, we're out of the rainy season, and so the landscape takes a little bit of a break. Watering it two days a week is actually more harmful than just one day a week."

There's a schedule to be followed according to Carey, with odd number houses watering on Saturday, even numbers on Sunday, and non-residential and businesses are allowed to water on Tuesday. "No one can water between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. because that's the warmest part of the day and lose up to 70 percent of your irrigation anyway. So, cooler times of the day, up to one hour per zone on those days, and everybody will be just great."

Volusia County does have fines for violations of watering restrictions as do many cities. You can find everything you need to know about the regulations for using water at volusia.org
