New Smyrna Beach, FL - Changes are coming to the State Road 44 corridor through New Smyrna Beach. The installation of a Traffic Adaptive Signal Traffic Control System will extend from Airport Road to the west and 3rd Avenue to the east. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) says the use of Adaptive Signal Control Technologies (ASCT) along the eight-mile stretch "will allow real-time adjustments in traffic signal timing in response to changing traffic volumes."
A modification to the existing turn lane on westbound S.R. 44 at Palmetto Street will extend its length back to Live Oak Street. It will also be restriped to allow through and right-turn traffic.
Jessica Ottaviano, FDOT Public Information Director says the public can expect to see overnight intersection work this week. "A lot of it's going to be single daytime lane closures but they're minimal impacts and the overall benefit here for those using the corridor is to have better traffic efficiency in the area."
Lane closures are scheduled from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at intersections but could also happen anytime during daytime and nighttime hours. People using S.R. 44 should look for electronic message boards and other signage for information on closures.
Ottaviano reminds motorists to stay alert and avoid distractions in construction areas.
