Daytona Beach, FL - Thousands of trucks are keeping Volusia County Beach Safety busy this Labor Day weekend but Captain Tamra Malphurs there are no serious problems to report. Her staff have responded to a bit more than 500 calls for service through yesterday (September 6).
The red flag has been on display and as of this morning, about 60 people have been rescued, without incident for the most part. On Saturday (September 5), one person that we rescued from the water was tranported to the hospital for precautionary reasons.
Malphurs says the beach was at parking capacity most of the day and all off beach parking areas were at capacity both Saturday and Sunday. The same is expected for today. High tide is at 11:59 a.m. at which time parking will be limited in some spots.
COVID-19 precautions are still in place and Malphurs says residents and visitors heading to the beach must continue to park at a post, maintain physical distancing and avoid congregating in large groups. With on-beach parking limited to ensure distancing can be maintained, vehicular access ramps may temporarily close due to capacity. Those planning to park on the beach should arrive early.
