VCBS Reports Drowning, Shark Bites

Daytona Beach, FL - Volusia County Beach Safety is reporting that a 67-year-old Missouri man was rescued from the ocean in Daytona Beach Shores this morning but was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. Captain Alex Miller reports that the man was swimming with his 24-year-old grandson in an unguarded area of the beach. Beachgoers pulled him from the water and started CPR. Beach Safety units, Daytona Beach Shores Fire Rescue and EVAC arrived on scene to render patient care.

Two shark bites were reported today in New Smyrna Beach. The first was a 71-year-old man from Jupiter, Florida. He was knee-deep in the water with a boogie board when he was bitten on the right foot. He was treated and released.

The second victim was a 12-year-old boy visiting from Cocoa Beach. He was standing in waist deep after jumping off his surfboard when he was bitten in the right calf. He was treated on scene then transported as a trauma alert to Halifax Health Medical Center.
